Antagonism and modes of action of Chaetomium globosum species group, potential biocontrol agent of barley foliar diseases Boletín de la Sociedad
Moya,Paulina; Pedemonte,Debora; Amengual,Susana; Franco,Mario E. E; Sisterna,Marina N.
"Net blotch" (Drechslera teres) and "Bipolaris spot blotch" (Bipolaris sorokiniana) are foliar diseases of barley. Biological control is currently considered as an efficient alternative to chemical management of these plant diseases. The aim of the present study was to identify 2 isolates of Chaetomium (C2 and C5), endophytics on barley seedlings and to study the in vitro interactions with D. teres and B. sorokiniana, isolated from seeds of the same host. Cultural and morphological characterization of all microorganisms was done. In addition, molecular characterization of Chaetomium spp. was conducted and dual culture tests were carried out to find, by microscopic observations, the effects of the antagonist on the morphology of the pathogens. The results...

Antagonism of Aspergillus terreus to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum BJM
Melo,Itamar S.; Faull,Jane L.; Nascimento,Rosely S..
An Aspergillus terreus strain showed in vitro antagonistic activity against the plant pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary. The interaction between A. terreus and sclerotia revealed that the mycoparasite sporulated abundantly on the sclerotial surface. Cell breakdown due to host cell wall disruption was observed in inner rind cells, by a scanning electron microscopy.

FOLIAR ENDOPHYTE FUNGI AS CANDIDATE FOR BIOCONTROL AGAINST Moniliophthora spp. OF Theobroma cacao (Malvaceae) IN ECUADOR Acta biol.Colomb.
VILLAVICENCIO-VÁSQUEZ,Mirian; ESPINOZA-LOZANO,Rodrigo Fernando; PÉREZ-MARTÍNEZ,Simón; CASTILLO,Daynet SOSA DEL.
ABSTRACT The adaptability of endophytic fungi to their hosts, the ecological benefits that it provides and the various antagonistic mechanisms against pests make them an alternative for the biological control of diseases. The potential of 17 strains of foliar endophytic fungi (FEF) obtained from healthy Theobroma cacao tissue as candidates for the biological control of Moniliophthora roreri (MR) and M. perniciosa (MP) was determined. We evaluated: i) mycoparasitism of FEF against colonies of Moniliophthora spp., ii) the effects of crude metabolites of FEF on the pathogens' growth, and iii) the ability to recolonize healthy leaves of the host by leaf assays. Three strains of Lasiodiplodia theobromae were the most promising: Ec098, Ec151 and Ec157. These...

Study of the interactions between Penicillium oxalicum Currie & Thom and Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler BJM
Sempere,F.; Santamarina,M.P.
The aim of this research was the analysis of the possible antagonistic effect of Penicillium oxalicum over the pathogen rice fungus A. alternata under different conditions of temperature, water activity and culture media. The macroscopic study of the dual growth revealed that according to the Index of Dominance P. oxalicum was more competitive that A. alternata at 25ºC whereas at 15ºC was this species. Microscopic analysis showed that P. oxalicum was a mycoparasite of A. alternata at all conditions tested. The antagonist penetrated into A. alternata and disintegrated its conidiophores and conidia. The results suggests that P. oxalicum may be a possible biological control agent of the rice pathogens in a future.
